Congratulations to our 2019 / 2020 IECA Award Winners! 

The mission of the IECA Awards program is to recognize outstanding achievements in the erosion and sediment control industry. These awards are selected on criteria that reflect quality, skill and environmental benefits. Winners were selected from responses to a “Call for Entries” process. All winners were recognized at the 2020 IECA Annual Conference and Expo in Raleigh, North Carolina on February 24.


The Environmental Excellence Award 

The Environmental Excellence Award is IECA's premier award. It recognizes an outstanding stormwater and erosion and/or sediment control project, program or operation that demonstrates excellence in natural resource conservation and environmental protection.

This year’s Environmental Excellence Award was presented to Dr. Rich McLaughlin and the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Erosion, Sediment and Turbidity Control Program. McLaughlin has directed research and developed and presented education at the facility. McLaughlin has mentored numerous graduate and undergraduate students and is equipping today's industry professionals and engaging the next generation through the NCSU ESTC program.


The Outstanding Professional of the Year Award 

The Outstanding Professional Award recognizes an IECA member that demonstrates excellence in their work in the industry and is viewed by IECA peers as an industry leader through significant engagement with IECA.

This year’s Outstanding Professional of the Year Award was presented to Earl Norton, M.S. CPESC, CPAg.  Norton joined IECA in 1995, and during the past 24 years, he has served on numerous committees and routinely reviews IECA abstracts and papers for the Annaul Conference. He has attended every annual meeting after joining IECA and has been a valuable contributor.


The Sustained Contributor Award 

The Sustained Contributor Award recognizes an IECA member who has provided distinguished service to IECA and has made outstanding contributions to improve the erosion and sediment control industry for a sustained period of time.

This year's Sustained Contributor Award was presented to Charles R. Riling, Jr., TRETCNO, ABI, CESSWI. Riling has dedicated a great deal of his time to both the Mid-Atlantic Chapter and the IECA Region One Board of Directors. He has been very involved with IECA professional development and training, and was a principal in starting the IECA University Partners Program. He has helped to mold and shape the organization for almost 30 years.


The Sustained Partner Award 

The Sustained Partner Award recognizes a company who has provided distinguished support to IECA and has made outstanding contributions to improve the erosion and sediment control industry for a sustained number of years.

This year's Sustained Partner Award was presented to East Coast Erosion Control. An IECA member since 2003, East Coast Erosion is an Emerald Member and Gold Sponsor of IECA for 2019. They have been exhibitors at the annual conference since 2004 and a conference sponsor at various levels for more than ten years.


Three Under 30 Young Professional Award

The Three Under 30 Young Professional Awards recognize three outstanding young professionals in stormwater and erosion and/or sediment control projects, programs, or academics that demonstrates excellence in natural resource conservation and environmental protection.

This year's Three Under 30 Young Professional Awards were presented to Michael A. Perez, Ph.D., CPESC; Kristine Sommer, CPESC, QISP, QSD; and Sylvie Spraakman, P.Eng. Perez is an Assistant Professor at Auburn University and helps direct the Auburn University Erosion and Sediment Control Research Facility. Sommer is the President of the Pacific Northwest Chapter and has guided the chapter to running an event in all the states in the Pacific Northwest Chapter. Spraakman is currently pursuing her PhD at the University of Toronto and is President of the IECA Canada - University of Toronto Student Club.


Four Under 40 Young Professional Award

The Four Under 40 Young Professional Awards recognize four outstanding young professionals in stormwater and erosion and/or sediment control projects, programs, or academics that demonstrates excellence in natural resource conservation and environmental protection.

This year's Four Under 40 Young Professional Awards were presented to Adam Dibble, CPESC, CESSWI; Wesley N. Donald, Ph.D., E.I., CPESC; Dylan Drudul, CPESC and Stefano Rignanese, MS. Dibble has been involved with IECA since he joined the erosion and sediment control industry 10 years ago. He’s has been on the Great Lakes Chapter Board for five years, has served on the Region One Board for the last four years, and is the current IECA Region One Board President. Donald has been an asset to IECA over the last 10 years, currently serving on several IECA committees and chairs one committee, in addition to being the Alabama State Representative to the Southeast Chapter. Drudul has previously served as President of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter and chair of the Chapter Presidents Council and currently serves on the Board of Directors for IECA - Region 1. Rignanese has presented at the Mid-Atlantic Chapter events and the IECA Annual Conference to increase knowledge of consulting companies and contractors on the importance of erosion and sediment control and stormwater management.


2019 Presenter of the Year

The Presenter of the Year Award recognizes the 2019 IECA Annual Conference presenter who received the highest classroom evaluation. The 2019 Presenter of the Year was awarded to Jason Lederer, CPESC, LEED AP and Troy Thompson, MS, PE for their presentation “Turning the River Right-Side-Up – Restoring the Swan River After a Century of Mining Impacts".

2020 Technical Paper of the Year

Voted on by industry peers, this year's Technical Paper of the Year Award recognized Lan Liu, MS & Michael A. Perez, Ph.D.,CPESC for their paper “Designing Silt Fence Sediment Barriers: A Performance Based Approach".

IECA is the foremost organization for those involved in or concerned about soil erosion control. Membership (in IECA) tells others you take erosion control seriously and you want to help make a difference.
